You'll fish for piranhas yourself, not watch from the boat.

Guide service, transport and all entry fees are included. The tour runs 4 to 9 hours depending on the itinerary you choose.

Step-by-step itinerary

Kukamas Tribe, Butterfly Preserve & Fishing

  • Visit Kukamas indigenous tribe
  • Learn about culture and crafts
  • Visit Pilpintuwasi butterfly garden
  • See rescued wildlife animals
  • Sport piranha fishing with guide
  • Navigate two Amazon tributaries

The experience

The Kukama community is the starting point. You'll spend time learning about their culture, typical dances, dialect and handmade crafts directly from the people who live there. This is not a museum display. You're visiting an active settlement on the river.

Pilpintuwasi comes next, a butterfly garden paired with a wildlife rescue center. The animals here (jaguars, giant anteaters, red-faced monkeys and others) were all rescued from the illegal wildlife trade and now live in the sanctuary. Walking through means seeing species you won't encounter anywhere else in the region, and understanding the conservation work happening on the ground.

The piranha fishing is hands-on. Your guide teaches you how to cast and work an artisanal fishing pole, then you fish the Amazon tributaries yourself. Between casts, you navigate two of these waterways, which the operator notes are ideal for photography. The whole experience runs between four and nine hours, so confirm the length when you book to fit it into your Iquitos schedule.
