The experience

The boat leaves the pier at the boulevard in Iquitos and heads out onto the Amazon River, the world's largest river, which flows through Peru, Colombia and Brazil. Your guide will teach you how to hold and cast the artisan fishing rod if you've never done it before. You spend the next hour fishing at the crossing where the Itaya River meets the Amazon, watching for the strike and learning which piranhas bite and which ones don't. Most species here are omnivores and harmless to humans despite their reputation.

The Amazon basin holds different piranha species, each with distinct behavior. Your guide knows the best spots and the patterns that bring them to the line. The jungle around you stays visible the whole time: the flora and fauna the river is known for, the water itself, the rhythm of casting and waiting. When the two hours are done, you head back to the pier and your guide drops you at the hotel.

Bring repellent, a cap, sunglasses and sunscreen. Light-colored clothes work better on the water. A camera is useful if you want to document the catch. The guide is a local expert who speaks English or Spanish, so you can ask about the river, the fish and the jungle as you fish. Children five and younger ride free. Infants sit on an adult's lap.
