Ten hours to reach a navigable lagoon ringed by glaciated peaks, with kayaking, hiking and time to absorb the scale

A full-day kayaking trip from Huaraz to Laguna Parón, the largest navigable lagoon in the Cordillera Blanca, includes private transportation, an official guide and access to the lake within Huascarán National Park. The lagoon sits surrounded by peaks over 6,000 meters, including Artesonraju, which inspired Paramount Pictures' logo. Kayaking and boating are arranged locally on arrival. A 45-minute walk reaches a viewpoint above the water. The 10-hour day involves several hours of driving north through the Callejón de Huaylas to reach the lake, then time on the water and surrounding terrain before returning to Huaraz.

The experience

The drive north from Huaraz passes through Carhuaz, Yungay and Caraz before entering Huascarán National Park. Several hours of transportation get you to the lagoon's edge. The exact timing depends on season and road conditions. Once there, you choose how to spend your time on the water: kayak directly on the lagoon (arranged with the local community on arrival), take a boat ride, or skip the water and walk instead. A 45-minute trail climbs to a viewpoint in the upper area, where the full ring of peaks comes into view.

Laguna Parón is the only large lagoon in the Cordillera Blanca open to kayaking. The water sits inside the Huascarán Biosphere Reserve, surrounded by Nevados, snow-capped peaks, that rise above 6,000 meters. Artesonraju, the pyramid-shaped mountain visible from the lagoon, is the one that became the Paramount Pictures logo. The ecosystem here is shaped by the altitude and the glacial melt that feeds the lake, creating a landscape most travelers see only in photographs.

Your guide is an official tourism guide who speaks Spanish and travels with you for the full day. Private transportation means no other travelers share the van, and your driver handles the route while the guide manages the stops and the timing. You return to Huaraz the same afternoon. Kayaking and boating are not included in the price (those services are paid separately to the local community when you arrive), so you can decide on the day whether the water appeals to you or whether the walk and the views are enough.

Is this one for you?The full day and the high-altitude drive are what make the remote location reachable in one trip from Huaraz. If you have the time and want to see the lagoon and the 6,000-meter peaks without a multi-day trek, the length is what gets you there and back.
