You’ll hike to Humantay Lake, take part in a real Andean ritual, and share a meal with fellow travelers—all with a local guide who knows every twist of the trail. If you want a day that’s both challenging and meaningful, this trip’s for you.
The first thing I noticed stepping out in the early morning was how chilly Cusco can be before sunrise—my breath made little clouds as we waited for our ride. Our guide, Juan, greeted us with a big smile and a thermos of coca tea, which honestly helped with the altitude more than I expected. The drive out of town was quiet, just a few street vendors setting up, and we passed through Mollepata as the sun started to warm up the valley. Breakfast was simple but filling—fresh bread, eggs, and that sweet, strong Peruvian coffee that sticks with you.
Once we hit the trail, it got real pretty fast. The path to Humantay Lake is steep in parts, and you’ll feel it in your legs, especially if you’re not used to the thin air. But there’s this moment when you catch your first glimpse of the turquoise water, framed by snowy peaks—it’s something I won’t forget. Locals were already there, quietly stacking stones into apachetas as offerings to Pachamama. Our guide explained how people come from all over to thank Mother Earth for safe travels, and he showed us how to leave our own stone, too. The air up there has this clean, almost sweet smell, and if you listen, you can hear the wind moving through the grass and the distant sound of a condor overhead.
It’s a moderate hike with some steep sections and high altitude. If you’re reasonably fit and take it slow, it’s very doable.
