experience

What’s the experience like?

The drive out of Cusco is always a bit chilly in the mornings—our driver met us right at the hotel lobby, and we set off through winding roads lined with eucalyptus trees and sleepy villages. The air smelled faintly of wood smoke. As we got closer to Cuyo Chico, snowy peaks popped into view, and you could spot the ancient Pisac terraces just beyond the fields.

When we arrived, a couple of locals greeted us with big smiles—one even handed me a cup of warm muña tea. Our guide, who spoke both Spanish and Quechua, explained how families here have been shaping clay for generations. We didn’t just watch; we actually dug our hands into the clay, learning to knead it just right before using these old wooden tools I’d never seen before. There’s something grounding about working with your hands while listening to the quiet chatter in Quechua around you.

Later on, we each picked a baked ornament to paint using traditional Andean pigments. I chose a little llama figure—my brushwork wasn’t perfect, but nobody minded. The best part? You get to take your creation home (mine still smells faintly of earth). Before heading back to Cusco, I browsed some handmade mugs and plates—couldn’t resist grabbing one as a gift. If you want a real slice of Sacred Valley life, this is it.
