The experience
The trek starts before dawn: pickup from your hotel at 3 a.m., then a three-hour drive to Chivay. From there you head to the Cruz del Condor, a stone viewpoint at 3,287 meters where the Andean condor, with a wingspan of 3 meters, rides the thermals above the canyon. The canyon itself is surrounded by terraced crops, small towns where traditions still hold, and herds of guanacos, llamas and alpacas crossing the roads. Your guide will walk you through the villages of Cosñirgua and Malata, where a 17th-century church still stands from the colonial era.
The descent to Sangalle takes roughly four hours, dropping almost 1,000 meters until you reach the oasis: a pocket of palms and natural pools heated to 24°C. You'll have time to swim and walk around before dinner and a night in bungalows under the canyon sky. The next morning you climb back up over four hours, leaving at 5 a.m. to avoid the strongest sun. If the ascent feels too steep, mules are available. Once you reach Cabanaconde, breakfast waits, then the route back to Chivay includes stops at the Huayrapunco viewpoint and the traditional town of Maca.
On the return to Arequipa, you'll visit the Chacapi thermal baths at 40°C for an hour, pass through a national reserve where your guide points out the difference between vicuñas, alpacas and llamas, and stop at a viewpoint of the volcanic chain: Sabancaya among them, still emitting gases. Lunch is included on the second day, and the whole route brings you back to the city by evening.

The trek passes through Cosñirgua and Malata on the way down, where a 17th-century colonial church still stands in Malata.
