The experience
The trek starts between 3:20 and 3:40 am. Early enough to reach Colca Canyon and begin hiking as the light breaks. You descend into the fourth deepest canyon in the world, walking through terrain where condors (the sacred birds of the Incas) soar overhead, and where alpacas, vicuñas, and llamas graze on the slopes. Volcanos rise around you. The day is long: you walk down and then back up, stopping to rest and take in the landscape. By evening you reach Sangalle, an oasis inside the canyon where a pool waits and the stars come out clear before sleep.
On the second morning you hike up the mountain early, watching the sun rise as you climb. Breakfast comes after the hike in Cabanaconde town. From there the route turns toward home: you stop in the village of Maca and at a viewpoint overlooking the Andenes, the Inca terraces that still terrace the mountainside. Then comes the thermal springs of Chacapi, where you can soak and recover. You arrive back in Arequipa around 5pm, near the Monastery of Santa Catalina. Your guide speaks both English and Spanish and stays with you throughout.
The trek suits people ready for a physical day of walking but not requiring mountaineering skill. You sleep in a private room with a shower, eat four meals (breakfast and lunch on day one, breakfast and dinner on day two), and travel by vehicle on the return route. Bring snacks for the morning hike. The operator can arrange vegetarian meals if you request them at booking.
What’s included

Is this one for you?The 2-day format gives you a full immersion in the canyon (a dawn hike, a night under the stars at Sangalle, and a sunrise climb out) rather than rushing the route in a single day. If you want to see the condors and the depth of the terrain without the pace of a day trip, this length makes it possible.
