The experience

The day starts with pickup from your Lima hotel and a 3-hour drive north in an air-conditioned van. You'll stop for breakfast along the way, then arrive at Caral, where your English-speaking guide takes over. The ruins sit in the Supe Valley, and the guide walks you through the site itself: the pyramids, plazas and residential areas that made up this civilization around 3000 BCE. This is not a quick stop: you have time to move through the structures and understand what you're standing in, not just photograph them from a distance.

After the archaeological site, the tour moves to Barranca beach, where Caral's people once lived. Lunch happens at a local seafood restaurant with views of the coast. If seafood isn't what you want, other dishes are available at your own cost. The beach itself is where you'll see the Cristo Redentor de Barranca, a large Christ statue overlooking the water. Then it's the drive back to Lima, with dropoff at your hotel.
