The experience

Your guide and driver pick you up from your Lima hotel in a private minivan or SUV and head south toward Pachacamac. The route first passes through Chorrillos, a traditional district that played a role in Peru's 19th-century war with Chile. You'll see the Villa wetlands (a refuge for wild animals and migratory birds), and views across La Herradura beach and the Costa Verde beach circuit before arriving at the archaeological site itself.

Pachacamac is built almost entirely of adobe, mud bricks stacked into temples, palaces and ceremonial squares that span four distinct cultures. Your guide explains the differences between the Lima, Ychma, Wari and Inca periods as you walk through the Acllawasi, the Old Temple, the Painted Temple, Philligrins Square and Taulichumbi palace. The museum gives context to what you're seeing in the ruins. From the Temple of the Sun, the highest point in the sanctuary, you get a panoramic view of the sea and the scale of the complex below.

The final stop is Barranco, Lima's bohemian coastal neighborhood.
