The experience

The tour starts with airport pickup and a one-hour boat ride to the lodge on the Madre de Dios River. After settling in, a two-hour guided walk through dense rainforest introduces the reserve's scale: trees over five hundred years old, toucans, macaws, orioles, monkeys and snakes all within the 278,000-hectare protected area. That evening you search for white caimans by flashlight on the river sandbars, and spot capybaras: the world's largest rodents, weighing up to 60 kilos.

Day two centers on Sandoval Lake, one of the largest in the reserve. A 3-kilometer forest walk gets you there. Then a rowing boat lets you drift past shansho monkeys, cormorants, jacanas and herons. Giant otters (nearly two meters long and endangered) sometimes appear. The lake is also home to piranhas and the largest caimans in the region, over 4 meters. A night walk afterward reveals insects, amphibians and reptiles active in darkness.

Day three is pure adrenaline. At 5:30 a.m. you climb the canopy walkway, platforms suspended 30 meters high over the Madre de Dios River, where you spot toucans and macaws from above. After breakfast, an instructor teaches you to use a safety harness for zip-lining through the trees. You glide between them feeling the speed and the canopy around you. The afternoon shifts to water: kayaking across the river at sunset, then artisanal fishing for catfish and other species with a line and patience.

Day four begins before dawn at the parrot clay lick, a riverbank wall where different bird species come to eat clay essential for their digestion. After breakfast and a return to the lodge, you visit a local indigenous family and participate in their daily activities, learning customs maintained over generations. The final morning is breakfast and transfer back to Puerto Maldonado airport or bus station.
