The experience
The day starts before sunrise. A vehicle picks you up from your Panama City hotel at 5am and drives into the remote foothills to San Cristobal, where you eat a typical Panamanian breakfast. From there, you walk through a campesino survival farm inside Chagres National Park to warm up for the hike ahead. The climb to Rio Piedras takes about two hours: a tributary of the Chagres River where the water is usually high enough to raft. (From late February through early June, water levels can drop, and you may hike all the way to the main Chagres River instead, which adds an extra hour.) Once you reach the water, you get into your raft with your guide and begin floating downstream through Class II-III rapids, watching the jungle close in on both sides.
The rafting section is where the day opens up. The Chagres River runs through territory so remote that few access roads exist. The park protects it against settlement, so the wildlife is real. Monkeys call from the canopy, sloths hang in the trees, river otters hunt in the shallows, and iguanas sun themselves on rocks. The rapids alternate with calm backwater stretches, giving you time to breathe and look around. After lunch (provided on the river), you continue downstream past a granite canyon where the white water picks up again. The raft ride ends just before Madden Lake, where a motorized wooden canoe, called a piragua, meets you and carries you the rest of the way to the nearest road. A driver waits there to return you to Panama City, arriving around 7pm.
Your guide is trained in white-water navigation, first aid and CPR, and speaks English. The group stays small: a minimum of four people per booking keeps it manageable. Rafts, life jackets, helmets and paddles are all provided, along with bottled water throughout the day. Breakfast and lunch are included. Bring sunscreen, a towel and a change of clothes for after the river.

Is this one for you? This is a full commitment (you leave at 5am and return around 7pm), so book it as your main activity for the day and plan nothing else. The length is what makes the remote section of river reachable and what keeps the group small enough to move safely through Class III rapids.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Youth (13 to 17 years): free; Child (9 to 12 years): free. Children under 9 can't be included in the booking.
What are the rapids like on the Chagres River?
The Chagres River section you raft is classified as Class II with several Class III rapids by international standards. The water alternates between fast current and calm backwater, and you float through an area so remote that few people ever see it.
How much of the day do I actually spend in the raft?
The hike to Rio Piedras takes about two hours, then you raft downstream for several hours before switching to the motorized canoe near Madden Lake. The full day runs 14 to 16 hours from pickup to drop-off, so plan to be away from your hotel from 5am until around 7pm.
What wildlife might I see?
Monkeys, sloths, river otters, iguanas, toucans and fish live in the park. Larger mammals like tapirs and jaguars inhabit the area too, though they are harder to spot. Your best chances come during the rafting sections when the jungle is quiet around you.
Do I need rafting experience to book this?
No experience is required, but you need at least a moderate level of physical fitness because of the two-hour hike and the full day on the water. Children are welcome from age 9 onward, and your guide will brief everyone on safety before you launch.
What happens if the water level is too low?
From late February through early June, Rio Piedras can run too shallow to raft. In that case, you hike an extra hour to the main Chagres River instead, which has more reliable water flow during those months.
