The experience
Isla Iguana sits five kilometers off Pedasi's coast as a protected marine reserve where the Caribbean seems to have drifted into the Pacific. The island spans 13 hectares of white sand beach and surrounds itself with over 40 hectares of coral reefs: the real draw for most visitors. Snorkeling here means seeing colorful fish, eels, turtles and sometimes dolphins. Iguanas line the shore, especially visible during their summer mating season. A trail crosses the island to El Faro beach, passing through two bomb craters left from World War II practice runs by the U.S. Army. Frigate birds nest here, and the whole place stays quiet enough that you can hear the water.
The boat has a roof, which matters on the water. You get snorkeling gear (mask and fins in adult sizes), towels, beach chairs, a cooler, filtered water with glasses, and flotation devices for kids. The operator asks you at booking which extras you want (noodle floaties, additional floats, umbrellas if conditions allow), because everything has to be transported and coordinated. You need to confirm what you're taking. Nothing arrives automatically. A captain who speaks Spanish runs the day and handles the boat. The tour runs six to eight hours depending on conditions and how long you stay in the water.
Weather occasionally stops crossings: the Panama Maritime Authority may not permit the boat to leave if conditions are unsuitable, which means the tour reschedules to the next day or gets refunded. This happens rarely during the winter months. Infants sit on an adult's lap. The tour suits most fitness levels, though it's not recommended for people with spinal injuries.
