The experience

You meet at 8:15am near Panama City and board the catamaran at 8:45am. The boat heads out past the Bridge of the Americas and the Amador Causeway toward the back of Taboga Island, where you anchor in a virgin bay around 10:45am. From there the morning is yours: swim, lie on the nets strung across the catamaran, sit in the shade with a drink from the open bar. The crew keeps music playing and serves snacks and drinks all day: rum, vodka, national beers, juices, sodas, water and swimming churros included.

Around noon the boat moves to the main beach and town of Taboga, and lunch arrives on china plates: stewed chicken, rice, banana and cabbage salad. After you eat, you choose. Some people stay on the catamaran and keep swimming and relaxing. Others take the tender down to walk the village, explore the beach or both. At 2:30pm the crew picks up anyone who went ashore, and the catamaran heads back to Panama City, arriving at 4:15pm. The whole day is 7.5 hours, which means you're back in the city with the afternoon still open if you need it.

Bring your towel and ID. Everything else is on the boat. You'll need a Panamanian identity card or a copy of your passport's main page and entry stamp (both showing the passport number). Shoes come off before boarding. The tour runs even if it rains. If you choose to visit the island, there's a $1 contribution for local beach maintenance services.
