The experience

Seven to eight hours takes you roughly 65 kilometres north of Lahore to Gurdwara Janam Asthan in Nankana Sahib, the shrine marking the birthplace of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism. The gurdwara sits at the heart of an ensemble of nine sacred sites in the town. Pilgrims visit to connect with the origins of the faith. From there the route turns toward Sheikhupura, another 40 kilometres northwest, to reach Hiran Minar: a 100-foot minaret built in 1606 by Mughal Emperor Jahangir as a monument to his pet antelope, Mansiraj, after the animal died during a hunting expedition. The monument stands in what was once a royal hunting reserve, and the grounds include a vast pool and a Baradari pavilion.

Your guide speaks English or Urdu and travels with you in an air-conditioned vehicle throughout the day. The itinerary weaves together two threads of the region's history: the spiritual significance of Nankana Sahib, where Sikhs come to honor their founder's birthplace, and the artistic legacy of the Mughal period, visible in the architecture and scale of Hiran Minar. A meal at a local restaurant or McDonald's or KFC is included, along with bottled water for the drive.
