Four hours with huskies and the Northern Lights, no sledding required

An evening activity near Alta where you meet 40+ huskies at Gargia Lodge, learn the history of Arctic dog sledding from a guide, share a traditional Arctic stew inside a Sámi-style hut, and watch for the Northern Lights. Transport from the city center is included. The activity does not include dog sledding itself.

The experience

The evening starts 30 minutes from Alta at Gargia Lodge, where around 40 huskies live. A guide introduces you to the dogs and explains how sled dog teams work, their role in Arctic history, and the bond between mushers and their animals. You meet and photograph the dogs, getting a sense of their energy and temperament up close. This is not a sledding experience. It is time spent with the dogs themselves, understanding their lives and what makes them suited to the Arctic.

After the kennel visit, you move into a traditional Sámi gamme, a hut built around an open fire. A hearty Arctic stew (inspired by meals served to travelers crossing Finnmark's harsh routes centuries ago) is the main course. While you eat, your guide shares stories about the Northern Lights and their cultural significance across thousands of years in this region. The warmth of the hut and the food create a natural pause in the evening, a moment to absorb what you have learned about Arctic life.

As darkness deepens, the Northern Lights may appear. There is no guarantee (they depend on solar activity and clear skies), but the guide will watch for them and point them out if they arrive. The combination of the dogs, the stories, and the possibility of the lights overhead is what makes this evening distinct from a standard husky kennel tour or a Northern Lights hunt from the city.
