The experience
Four hours from start to finish, beginning with a minibus ride of about 30 minutes from Alta to Gargia. Once you arrive, you'll pull on thermal suits, boots and gloves, then meet your guide for training on how to command the huskies before you take the reins yourself. If you're going with one other person, you'll split the driving time roughly in half so both of you get to lead the team.
The huskies pull you through pine forest near the mountain lodge and out across the frozen landscape for roughly an hour of sledding. You're steering the team, feeling the rhythm between you and the dogs as they run. Afterward, you retreat to the historic Gargia mountain lodge to thaw out. Lunch and hot coffee or toddy warm you up while your guide talks through the history of dog sledding in the region and what life looks like in Alta's Arctic winter.

Is this one for you?You drive the team yourself after training, so this suits anyone who wants hands-on control rather than watching from a passenger sled. Pairs split the driving time evenly, making it fair if you're booking with a partner. Solo travelers or groups of three or more should confirm the arrangement when booking.
