The experience
You stand on the runners of a dog sled behind a team of Alaskan Huskies, feeling the bite of Arctic cold and listening to the silence of the vast landscape around you. The operator's family settled in Alta over thirty years ago to dedicate themselves to dog sledding, racing and training on these same frozen tracks. That knowledge shapes every trip: you get safety instruction before you leave, then roughly an hour on the sled across terrain where Europe's best mushers train for the Finnmarksløpet. The frozen landscape glitters in sunlight or shifts through shades of blue, pink and purple under the polar night, depending on the season you visit.
After the ride, you return to a traditional Lavvo, a Sámi-style shelter, where the team shares stories about the sport and serves coffee or tea while you warm up. Thermal suits, hats, gloves and wool socks are provided, so you don't need to bring cold-weather gear. A driver picks you up at Alta Tourist Information at 9:00 a.m. and brings you back to the same spot when the three-hour experience ends.
