The experience
The day starts at Bergen train station. A train carries you inland to Voss, where you switch to a bus heading south toward Gudvangen. From there, a ferry crosses the Sognefjord for two hours, passing between steep mountainsides as the boat enters the narrower Aurlandsfjord and Nærøyfjord: both UNESCO World Heritage sites. The ferry ends at Flåm, a small village where you have time to eat and browse local shops before the next leg.
The return journey climbs rather than descends. The Flåmsbana railway is the centerpiece: a single-track line that rises 862 metres from Flåm at sea level to the mountain station of Myrdal, engineered to wind through tunnels and across viaducts as it ascends. From Myrdal, a train carries you back to Bergen. The whole loop takes roughly ten hours from start to finish, with the ferry and the Flåmsbana accounting for most of that time.
Because this is self-guided, you navigate using the itinerary and tickets sent to your email before the tour date. No guide travels with you. You manage the schedule and transfers on your own. This means you set your own pace at Flåm (longer if you want to linger, shorter if you prefer to move through), and you choose where to sit on each leg. The route itself is fixed by the train and ferry timetables, but the experience of moving through it is yours alone.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (2 to 15 years); Infant (under 2): free.
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
How do I get from Bergen station to the first train?
The tour begins at Bergen train station, where you board the train to Voss. Your itinerary and tickets arrive by email before your departure date, so you'll have all the information you need to find the platform and board on time.
What happens during the ferry crossing from Gudvangen to Flåm?
The ferry is a two-hour cruise on a classic boat through the Sognefjord, Aurlandsfjord and Nærøyfjord, all UNESCO-listed waters. You travel by water between steep mountain walls, watching the landscape change as the boat moves deeper into the narrower fjords before arriving at Flåm.
What is the Flåmsbana railway and why does it take so long to get back to Myrdal?
The Flåmsbana is a mountain railway that climbs 862 metres from Flåm at sea level to Myrdal station. It is engineered to ascend gradually through tunnels and across viaducts, so the journey takes time, but that slow climb is the point, letting you see the terrain change as you rise from the fjord into the mountains.
Can I get lunch or buy things in Flåm?
Yes. You have free time in Flåm between the ferry arrival and the Flåmsbana departure, so you can eat at a local restaurant or café and shop for souvenirs. Food and drinks are not included in the tour price.
Do I need to book this tour in advance, or can I just show up at Bergen station?
You must book in advance. Your itinerary and all tickets are issued and sent to your email before the tour date. During high season (May 15 to September 15), train availability is limited and departure times may be adjusted based on what is available when you book.
Is there a guide with me the whole time, or do I travel alone?
This is a self-guided tour, so no guide travels with you. You navigate using your itinerary and tickets, and you manage the transfers and timing on your own. This gives you freedom to move at your own pace, especially during the stop in Flåm.
