The Experience

“If you listen close, you’ll hear the sea arguing with the stones,” our driver Patrick said as we pulled up to the Giant’s Causeway. He was right—the wind whipped so hard it almost stole my hat, and the waves crashed against those strange basalt columns like they’d been fighting forever. We’d started out from Belfast early (Patrick brought water and what he called ‘a proper snack’—it was shortbread), winding along the Antrim Coast Road. It’s all sheep-dotted hills and sudden glimpses of blue-grey sea, and sometimes you just want to stop and stare for a minute, which we actually did. No rush at all.

I’m not great with heights, but somehow I found myself halfway across the Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge before I realized my hands were sweating. The bridge swings a bit more than I expected—someone behind me laughed (nervously? maybe it was me). Patrick told us about fishermen crossing here for centuries; it made my wobbly legs feel like part of something old. Later at Ballintoy Harbour, there was this salty tang in the air and a couple of locals mending nets—one nodded at us but kept humming his tune. The sun came out just long enough to make everything shine slick and green.

The Giant’s Causeway itself is stranger than any photo—hexagons everywhere under your feet, some slippery with spray. I tried to count them (gave up fast). There’s a low hum from other visitors but also these quiet pockets where you can hear nothing but wind and your own thoughts. We finished at Dunluce Castle, crumbling right over the edge of the cliffs—felt like a place that could swallow secrets. Even now I catch myself thinking about those stones and stories, especially when it rains back home.
