The Experience

The jeep climbs away from the town in a controlled scramble up the mountain, dust and engine noise mixing with the view getting wider behind you. It's not a smooth road — the driver knows every rut, and you feel the weight shift as the vehicle angles into the slope. Twenty minutes in, you're at the take-off point, the lake spread below like something you'd only seen from a plane before. Your pilot runs through the briefing — ten minutes of how the glider catches air, how your weight matters, what happens if the wind shifts. It's practical, not theatrical. Then you're both in the harness, clipped in, and the ground stops feeling solid.

The flight lasts between 10 and 15 minutes depending on what the air is doing that day. You're not fighting it; the pilot is reading it, and you're along for the reading. The lake turns from a view into something you're actually floating above — the water so clear you can see the shape of the bottom in places, the mountains rising on the far side in layers of green and grey. If the thermals are right, the pilot might hand you the controls for a moment, let you feel how little input it takes to shift direction. Most of the time you're just watching him work, listening to his voice explain what he's doing, feeling the glider respond to invisible currents.

You land back at Cuba Libre beach, the same place you started from, feet on sand instead of in air. The whole thing — pickup from your hotel, the jeep ride, the flight, the landing — takes a couple of hours. Before you leave, there are photos or video from the flight, depending on what was captured. You can sit with a drink and actually process what just happened, or just stand there looking at the lake from ground level and knowing you've seen it from somewhere else.
