You begin at the interactive exhibition, where the guide walks you through the sanctuary's 500-year vision and the natural history of New Zealand before leading you into the valley itself. This timing—two hours before sunset—is deliberate: it catches the window when day-active birds are still visible but nocturnal species are beginning to stir.

Walking through the regenerating valley, you encounter wētā, takahē, tuatara and other species unique to New Zealand. The guide points out how the forest changes as light fades: birds returning to settle into their nests, the evening sky shifting, and the soundscape transforming from the calls of daytime species to the first sounds of kiwi and ruru (morepork) waking. This transition—the dusk chorus—is the centrepiece of the experience, and it happens because you are there at the exact moment it occurs.
