The experience
How do you actually get to the places Peter Jackson filmed? You start with a private vehicle and a guide who lives here. The tour visits the film locations for Helm's Deep, Minas Tirith and Mount Doom around Wellington, and takes you to Taita levy where Jackson filmed in his own backyard. The vantage point that made those shots possible. From there, you head to Kaitoke Regional Park, a 40-minute drive north, where the Rivendell scenes were shot in the valley of Te Awakairangi. You're not watching a video about these places. You're standing where the cameras rolled.
The Weta Workshop visit sits in the middle of the day: 90 minutes inside the creative hub that built the props, costumes, creatures and models for the films. You walk through the Miniatures Stage Tour to see the models made for Thunderbirds Are Go and other productions, watch a short documentary on Miramar Peninsula's film-making history, and browse the Cave shop for collectibles and prop replicas designed by the artists who made them. This is not a museum behind velvet ropes. It is the actual workshop where the work happened.
Lunch arrives after the workshop. A meal Aaron has prepared using local New Zealand delicacies, served as part of the tour. You also get a 300ml beer or 200ml wine per adult, bottled water, and the option to dress as your favourite character (Gandalf, Frodo, or another) if you want to. The vehicle is air-conditioned, and the guide picks you up from your accommodation.
