Summary

Ride the Wellington cable car, see city views, and wander rose gardens

You’ll explore Wellington with a local guide who knows every shortcut and story — from panoramic views atop Mt Victoria to riding the historic cable car, wandering through lush botanic gardens, and catching glimpses of daily life around Parliament. With port pickup included, you’ll experience moments (and maybe windswept hair) you’ll remember long after your ship sails away.

experience

What’s the experience like?

I didn’t really know what to expect from Wellington — I’d only ever seen photos of the harbor, but stepping off the cruise ship that morning, I felt this weird mix of excitement and calm. Our guide, Mark (he grew up here), met us right at the port with this easy smile and a joke about the wind. He said if you don’t lose your hat in Wellington at least once, you’re not doing it right. The van was comfy and warm, which mattered because there was this salty chill in the air that clung to my jacket.

We wound our way up Mt Victoria first — honestly, I thought I’d seen enough city lookouts on other trips, but something about this one hit different. Maybe it was the way the light bounced off all those little white houses stacked up the hillsides or how quiet it got up there, just gulls and distant traffic. Mark pointed out where Parliament sits (the Beehive — which really does look like one), and told us about that old ferry disaster near Barrett’s Reef. It’s strange hearing stories like that while looking out over such a peaceful view.

The Wellington cable car is kind of a must-do — red paint peeling a bit here and there, but still chugging along since 1902. I tried to pronounce Kelburn like a local; Mark laughed and said I sounded “almost right.” At the top, there’s this tiny museum full of old tickets and photos — smelled faintly of oil and dust. The view from up there is wild; you can see all the way across the harbor if you squint past the clouds. We drifted down through the Botanic Gardens after that (I wish I could bottle that damp earth smell) and caught sight of roses in every color at Lady Norwood Rose Garden — even though it wasn’t peak bloom, it was still kind of magical.

Driving past Premier House felt almost sneaky — like peeking into someone else’s life for a second. There were school kids waving as we went by, bundled up against the wind. I kept thinking how Wellington feels both big-city and small-town at once. By the time we looped back to port, my hair was a mess from all that wind but I didn’t care much; I still think about those views sometimes when things get noisy back home.
