The experience
You drive your own route and the audio guide activates when you reach each stop. The tour covers New Zealand's highest sealed public road pass at 1,076 meters, where you pull over at the summit vista to photograph the Wakatipu Basin and mountains. Along the way you pass the Cardrona Bra Fence (a roadside quirk where hundreds of bras hang on a fence to support the Breast Cancer Foundation), and stop at the Cardrona Hotel, an 1860s gold-rush landmark with a restaurant and beer garden. The narration weaves in stories of Māori trailblazers, explorers and skiing pioneers as the landscape shifts from high alpine to river valleys.
Arrowtown sits halfway through the route: a preserved gold-mining town with over 60 historic buildings, a Chinese Settlement you can explore on foot, and gold-panning opportunities along the Arrow River. From there the drive descends toward Queenstown, passing the Shotover Jet location and Onsen Hot Pools before reaching the city itself. The final stops let you drive past Remarkables Park retail hub and up to the Remarkables ski area base, where summer hikers and gondola riders access the views over the basin. Every stop is optional. You choose whether to linger or keep moving.
The tour lives in an app on your phone and works offline, so you don't burn data or lose the audio in dead zones. You get lifetime access, meaning you can drive the route again on a return visit or share the app with travel companions. The directions guide you to the starting point, and once you're there, the audio and GPS activate automatically.

Is this one for you?Start from Wānaka if you have a rental car or are driving your own vehicle. The tour guides you the entire way to Queenstown and works just as well if you're staying in either town and want to make the drive between them. If you don't have a car, you'll need to arrange one separately. The tour itself is the audio and navigation, not the transportation.
