A full day of high country views, island wildlife and a lake within a lake

The Wanaka Nature Encounter is a nine-hour guided tour combining a morning 4WD safari through private West Wānaka Station backcountry with an afternoon boat cruise to Mou Waho Island nature reserve and guided walk. You explore high country terrain most locals never see, stop for refreshments and a picnic lunch on a private beach, then cruise to the island to walk uphill through native birdlife to a hidden lake on top of the island. Groups stay under twelve travelers. Moderate fitness is needed for the 40-minute island walk, which is uphill but includes rest stops.

The experience

Nine hours covers two distinct landscapes. The morning 4WD safari takes you across private farm roads on West Wānaka Station, where you see red deer, sheep and Angus cattle grazing in their natural environment against views of the Southern Alps and Lake Wanaka. Your local guide stops at a lookout hill for refreshments and talks through farming history, early settler stories and the station's conservation work. A picnic lunch follows on a private beach before the afternoon shift.

The boat then carries you out to Mou Waho Island, a nature reserve where native birds live protected from mainland predators. A guided walk climbs the hillside (40 minutes uphill with stops to rest and chat) to reach the island's summit and its secret: a lake sitting on top of the island, ringed by views back across Lake Wanaka. The guide offers nature interpretation throughout, and you help with predator control work the station runs. Easy alpine meadow walks fill the gaps between the bigger moments.

Transport, lunch, morning and afternoon tea are included. The guide speaks English and delivers live commentary on the boat. You'll need moderate fitness for the island walk. The uphill grade is steady but the guide paces it to let you rest and take in the surroundings.

Top questions

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Child (under 15).

What's the lake on top of Mou Waho Island?

Mou Waho Island sits in Lake Wanaka, and on the island itself sits another lake: a smaller body of water at the summit that the guide shows you after a 40-minute uphill walk. It's the island's hidden feature and the reason the walk is worth the climb.

How fit do I need to be for this tour?

Moderate fitness is required, mainly for the island walk portion. The 40-minute uphill track to the lake has rest stops built in, and the guide adjusts pace so you can chat and recover as you go. The 4WD safari and boat cruise have no fitness demands.

What animals will I see on the 4WD safari?

Red deer, sheep and Angus cattle graze on West Wānaka Station's private high country terrain. You see them in their natural environment across backcountry farm roads that most locals never travel.

Is the boat ride rough, or is it a smooth cruise?

The tour description calls it a leisurely lake cruise to Mou Waho Island. The boat delivers live commentary as you travel, and the pace is set for sightseeing and bird watching rather than speed.

What's included in the lunch?

A picnic lunch is provided on a private beach in the afternoon, before you board the boat to the island. Morning and afternoon tea are also included throughout the day.

How many people go on this tour?

Groups are kept to a maximum of twelve travelers, so the experience stays small and the guide can manage the pace and answer questions for everyone.
