Walk the geothermal valley at your own speed, then cruise past spouting geysers and steaming cliffs

The full Waimangu Experience combines a self-guided walk through New Zealand's geothermal valley with a 45-minute boat cruise on Lake Rotomahana. You choose how much of the graded and rugged trail to cover (from gentle sections to the valley floor), then board a geothermal cruise to see the Pink and White Terraces site, spouting geysers and steaming cliffs. A free shuttle bus runs between the valley and visitor centre, so you can walk as much or as little as you want.

The experience

Waimangu Volcanic Valley sits near Rotorua and holds some of New Zealand's most active geothermal features. The walk starts at the visitor centre and descends through the valley on trails you control: you can follow gentle graded sections or take on the more rugged hiking paths, passing Frying Pan Lake (the world's largest hot spring) and the vivid blue Inferno Crater Lake. Because a free shuttle bus runs up and down the valley, you're not locked into a set route: walk as far as you want, then catch the bus back up when you're ready.

The trails lead down to Lake Rotomahana, where you board a 45-minute geothermal boat cruise. The cruise passes the site of the famous Pink and White Terraces and shows you the lake's active features: spouting geysers, steaming cliffs and fumeroles rising from the water. A guide on the boat explains the lake's history and what you're seeing. After the cruise, the shuttle takes you back to the visitor centre.

The experience is built for independent walkers who want to set their own pace and choose how much terrain to cover. An air-conditioned vehicle and guide sheet support the walk, and the whole outing takes around four hours from start to finish. Wheelchair access is available but limited to confident users. Infants can travel in a pram or stroller, and service animals are welcome.
