The Experience
You're clipped in and stepping off the platform. The 400-meter tandem line stretches ahead, and then you're moving — fast, racing at up to 80 km/h through the canopy with someone else on the same cable, the forest blurring below. That's the centerpiece of the Ultimate tour in Rotorua, but it's not the whole story. The three-hour experience threads six ziplines of different lengths through one of New Zealand's last remaining ancient forests, a place so dense and untouched that the guides call it exclusive to the tour operator.
Between the ziplines, you're walking. Not hiking — short walks, maybe 500 meters total across the day, mostly on platforms and staircases built into the trees themselves. There's a spiral staircase wrapped around a 1,000-year-old Tawa tree, a floating staircase suspended high in the canopy, and then the thing that stops people mid-step: a volcanic cliff walk 50 meters above the valley floor. It's the only one of its kind in New Zealand. The guides — they call themselves superheroes, and they're not wrong — keep the pace steady and the energy high, pointing out rare native birds and the ferns and plants that exist nowhere else on earth. They photograph you on the lines and email the shots free after you leave.
The suspended swing bridges are the part that gets people talking afterward. You're standing on one, looking down at the forest valley, and the bridge moves under your feet in a way that feels deliberate and safe but still makes your stomach register the height. Small groups mean you're never crowded on the platforms, and the forest itself feels like you've stepped into something private. Transport from headquarters to the forest is included, so you don't navigate it yourself. Wet-weather and warm gear come with the booking — Rotorua's weather shifts, and the tour runs in most conditions.
You'll need closed-toe shoes and a moderate level of fitness — the walks are short but there are stairs, and the ziplines demand you be comfortable with heights and movement. Maximum weight is 265 pounds. After three hours, you're back at the base with dry clothes, free photos on your phone, and the knowledge that your booking supported forest restoration and predator control work happening on the land you just moved through.

Your three-hour adventure includes all safety gear (helmet, harness, and equipment), wet-weather and warm gear if conditions demand it, return transport from the tour headquarters to the forest, secure storage for your valuables while you're on the lines, and free professional photos of you on the ziplines and platforms, emailed to you after the tour ends.
