The Experience
The tour runs five hours and starts with the vineyards. Your guide takes you to three handpicked producers: a boutique operation known for small-lot, single-vineyard wines; the highest vineyard on the island, where the elevation brings both incredible views and incredible wine; and Mudbrick, the sprawling hilltop estate in Oneroa that overlooks Rangitoto Island and Auckland City. Mudbrick's hand-picked grapes run from Sauvignon Blanc to Syrah, and the vineyard itself doubles as New Zealand's go-to wedding venue, ringed by topiare flowers, rosemary and lavender bushes. You taste at each stop.
Lunch happens at Ki Maha, an upmarket restaurant across the road from Onetangi Beach. The meal includes bread and dips, a main course, and a glass of wine or beer. If time allows after eating, you can walk down to the beach and dip your toes in the ocean. The guide's commentary throughout brings the island's wine culture and history to life at a pace that lets you absorb both the tastings and the scenery.
