The tour starts at the cellar door, where your host walks you into the cave itself — the largest wine storage space in New Zealand. You're standing among the barrels and bottles where the wine actually sits, not in a tasting room looking at a map of where it came from. The cave holds the current releases you'll taste, so the three tastings happen in the space where the wine has been aging.
Your host also takes you to the region's first vines, originally planted by Alan Brady in 1983 when he founded Gibbston Valley. You see where Central Otago wine began, then return to taste what it has become. The whole experience runs 30 minutes, which is enough time to move through the cave and understand how the place works without a long commitment.
The tour is wheelchair accessible throughout — all areas and surfaces accommodate mobility devices. Service animals are welcome. You need to be at least 18 to join, and the experience suits all fitness levels.
