The Experience

The journey starts with a coach ride from Queenstown south along Lake Wakatipu, past the Remarkable mountain range and through Mossburn—the deer capital of New Zealand—into Te Anau. That afternoon you board the luxury catamaran Luminosa for a scenic cruise across Lake Te Anau to the western shore, where small groups descend into the Glowworm Caves. You walk and boat through the cavern, watching water sculpt the rock formations before gliding into darkness to see thousands of tiny glowworms suspended above you. That night you stay in a three-star hotel within walking distance of Te Anau's shops.

Day two is the overnight on Doubtful Sound. A coach takes you from Te Anau to Manapouri, then across Lake Manapouri and over Wilmot Pass to Deep Cove, where you board the Fiordland Navigator at 12:30. The purpose-built vessel has private cabins with ensuite bathrooms or quad-share bunk compartments with shared facilities, plus spacious deck areas for watching the fiord's wild scenery. You'll kayak and explore the coastline by tender boat—watch for fur seals, dolphins, and in season, rare penguins. Dinner is a buffet in the dining saloon; breakfast follows the sunrise before you disembark around midday.

The return to Queenstown on day three is a scenic coach ride north. You pass through Mossburn again, then Kingston—home to the Kingston Flyer steam train—before the Remarkable Mountains come into view as you approach Queenstown. The entire tour uses a combination of touring coaches with driver commentary and point-to-point services, so you may travel with different groups and drivers on each leg. Meals beyond dinner and breakfast are not included, and you have free time to explore and eat where you choose.

Top questions

What exactly are the glowworms in Te Anau caves, and how do you see them?

The glowworms are tiny bioluminescent insects that live on the cave ceiling and walls. You travel by small boat through silent darkness into the grotto where thousands of them glow above you—the guides take you through in small groups so the experience stays intimate and the light stays undisturbed.

Can I choose between a private cabin and a bunk room on the Fiordland Navigator?

Yes. The Fiordland Navigator has both private cabins with ensuite bathrooms and quad-share bunk-style compartments with shared bathroom facilities, so you pick which suits you at checkout.

What activities happen during the overnight on Doubtful Sound?

You kayak on the fiord and take excursions in tender boats to explore the coastline and watch for wildlife—fur seals, dolphins, and occasionally rare penguins depending on the season. The ship has spacious deck areas for viewing the scenery between activities.

Are meals included on this tour?

Dinner and breakfast are included—dinner is a buffet on the ship, and breakfast is served before you disembark. Lunch and other meals are not included, so you choose where and when to eat during free time in Te Anau and Manapouri.

When does this tour operate?

The tour runs from 1 October through 30 April only. It departs Queenstown on day one and returns on day three, with the overnight on Doubtful Sound on day two.

Do I need experience with kayaking to join?

No. The tour is suitable for all physical fitness levels, and children are welcome from age 5. The kayaking is part of the activities offered, and the guides work with all ability levels on the fiord.
