Step-by-step itinerary

Private tour of Waitomo Glowworm Cave

  • Meet guide at meeting point
  • Drive to Maungarongapu Cave
  • Explore untouched caves slowly
  • Enjoy glowworm displays
  • Take photos with pocket camera

The experience

This is a small-group tour, not a crowded one: your party stays between two and eight people, which means you set the pace through the caves instead of following a fixed schedule. The guide tailors the route to what your group wants to linger on: the glowworm displays, the rock formations, the passages themselves. You move slowly enough to actually take in the surroundings instead of being herded through. The caves sit on a family farm in the Waitomo district, a short drive from Waitomo Caves Village. The location is deliberately off the main tourist track, which is why the scenery stays untouched.

Before you go in, the operator outfits you completely: thermal top, thermal pants, fleece top, shorts, gumboots, socks, helmet and headlamp. Everything you need to stay warm and safe underground. Once the tour ends, you shower on-site, change back into your own clothes, and the operator handles the dirty laundry. Tea, coffee and a snack come after, so you're not rushed out the door. Small pocket-sized cameras are welcome, so you can document the glowworms if you want to.

The three-hour commitment includes the cave time, the gear setup and the refresh afterward. A reasonable level of physical fitness is needed (the caves involve movement and navigation), and children under 16 must come with an adult. The minimum group size is two people. The maximum is eight.

Is this one for you? You'll need your own transport to reach the farm location, which rules this out if you're without a car or staying far from Waitomo, but that same isolation is what keeps the caves untouched and the groups small, so the trade-off is built into why this tour works the way it does.

Top questions

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What are the glowworms like in the Waitomo caves?

The glowworms create displays throughout the cave system that the guide will show you as part of the tour. The operator describes them as mesmerizing, and the untouched cave environment is what keeps them thriving. That's why the farm location matters.

Do I need to bring my own thermal clothing and boots?

No. The operator provides thermal tops, thermal pants, fleece tops, shorts, gumboots and socks, so you arrive in whatever you want to travel in and change into cave gear on-site. After the tour, you shower and put your own clothes back on.

How do I get to the cave entrance at 1199 Oparure Road?

You'll need your own transport. There is no public transport to the location and the operator does not offer pickup or dropoff. The caves are a short drive from Waitomo Caves Village, Te Kuiti and Otorohanga.

Can I take photos inside the cave?

Yes, small pocket-sized cameras are welcome. Larger equipment may be impractical in the cave environment, but the operator welcomes photography during the tour.

What happens if I'm not very fit?

A reasonable level of physical fitness is required for this tour because moving through caves involves navigation and physical effort. The operator notes it is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries or significant physical difficulties, so assess your comfort level before booking.
