Step-by-step itinerary

- Join guided tour at Waitomo Caves
- Walk through Cathedral Cave formations
- Glide silently by boat in Glowworm Grotto
- Observe thousands of glowworms lighting cave
- Listen to expert guide's historical commentary
The experience
The tour starts with a walk through the Cathedral Cave, where massive limestone formations and natural acoustics set the scale of what lies ahead. Then you board a small boat and push off into near-total darkness, letting your eyes adjust as the glowworms come into focus: thousands of tiny Arachnocampa luminosa suspended from the cave ceiling, each one a point of light reflected in the water below. The boat moves at a drift, no engine noise, so the only sound is the guide's voice and the soft lap of water against stone.
The Glowworm Grotto is the heart of the experience: a stretch of the underground Waitomo River where the density of glowworms turns the cave into something that feels like a planetarium. Your guide shares the natural history (how these creatures are unique to New Zealand, how they've drawn visitors since the 1880s), and the Maori cultural significance of the caves. Many guides are direct descendants of the chief who first led explorers through this system, so the commentary carries a depth most cave tours don't reach.
Photography is not permitted inside the caves, so you're left with the moment itself rather than the photo. Souvenir images are available to purchase after the tour. Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring a warm jacket. The caves stay cool year-round, and the walk to the boat involves stairs. Infants sit on an adult's lap in the boat. Arrive 30 minutes early to check in. Late arrivals forfeit their ticket.

Top questions

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What exactly are glowworms and why do they light up in Waitomo Caves?
Glowworms are Arachnocampa luminosa, a species found only in New Zealand. They produce a bioluminescent glow to attract prey, and the thousands suspended from the cave ceiling create the effect of stars reflected in the river below as you drift past.
How long is the actual boat ride through the glowworm grotto?
The entire tour is 45 minutes, which includes the walk through the Cathedral Cave and the silent boat drift through the Glowworm Grotto. Most of that time is spent on the water, moving slowly enough to take in the full effect.
What's the difference between the Cathedral Cave and the Glowworm Grotto?
The Cathedral Cave is the first section you walk through, known for its massive limestone formations and natural acoustics. The Glowworm Grotto is the second section where you board the boat and drift under thousands of glowworms along the underground river.
Are there any restrictions I should know about before booking?
No photography is allowed inside the caves. You'll need comfortable walking shoes and a warm jacket. The tour involves navigating stairs, so it's not suitable for those with difficulty on stairs. You must arrive 30 minutes before your scheduled departure time. Late arrivals forfeit their ticket.
Who are the guides on this tour?
Guides are local and speak English. Many are descendants of the Maori chief who originally explored the caves, so they can share both the natural history and the cultural significance of the site.
