The experience

Two to three hours on foot takes you through Nelson's main streets and gardens with a guide who actually lives here. You'll walk up Trafalgar Street past varied architecture and art installations, reach Christ Church Cathedral at the elevated heart of the cityscape, then move through South Street to see heritage cottages dating back to 1863: the oldest preserved street in New Zealand with residents still living in them. The walk stays on sealed surfaces, almost completely flat. Where a few steps do appear, a ramp alternative exists so the pace doesn't break.

Hardy Street comes next, lined with architecture spanning different eras, and opens into Queen's Gardens: a Victorian formal garden with an historic eel pond that winds through the grounds. You'll stop at the Lord of the Rings jeweller and studio, and next door you can watch glass artists at work from an external viewing platform at Flame Daisy. The Suter Art Gallery, Nelson's main exhibition space, gets its own stop so you can step inside and see what's on. By the end, your guide takes you to the monument marking the trigonometrical and gravitational centres of New Zealand: a walk to the hilltop that can be done separately if you want to extend the day.

Sunscreen and a reusable, compostable eco cup come with the tour. Water refill stations sit along the route so you don't carry a full bottle. A disposable face mask is available if you need one.
