The experience
The day starts at 8:30am from your Nelson accommodation and heads inland over the Waimea Plains through orchards and farmland toward Takaka Hill. The single road climbs steeply through a mix of mature native forest, regenerating scrub and managed woodland, with views alternating between Kahurangi National Park and Tasman Bay below. A short walk leads to a viewing platform through ancient granite and marble outcrops, and into Ngarua Cave. The guide's special access here means you exit near a Hobbit film location site, a detail most visitors miss on their own.
Descending into Golden Bay, the landscape opens to dairy farmland with Kahurangi's mountains rising above. The route passes Te Waikoropupu Springs, the largest freshwater springs in New Zealand and the clearest water ever measured anywhere in the world: a place held in high cultural regard by Māori and surrounded by regenerating native forest with mature beech and podocarp trees. Toward the eastern side of Golden Bay, limestone formations frame the road as it passes through a natural hole in the rock, leading to the Abel Tasman memorial lookout and the golden sands of Ligar Bay and Tata Beach.
A walk into Abel Tasman National Park brings you to Wainui Falls, the largest waterfall in the region. If time allows, a stroll through Takaka village (often described as a hippy village attracting artisans from around the world), rounds out the day. Throughout, your guide provides interpretation of the diverse landforms, rock formations and forest types. Water, fresh fruit, tea, coffee and a gourmet picnic lunch are included, along with all national park entry fees and transport in an air-conditioned minivan.
