The experience
You're picked up from your Queenstown accommodation and driven south through the high country toward Mt. Cook. The route crosses Lindis Pass, where tussock-covered hills and snow-capped peaks frame the landscape, and stops at Roaring Meg Lookout to see the turquoise waters of the Kawarau River. At High Country Salmon, a local farm, you can feed the fish and taste fresh salmon before lunch at a hotel positioned to show off Mt. Cook and its glaciers.
The day centers on two walks in Mt. Cook National Park. The Hooker Valley Track at dawn gives you the first rays of sun over the Southern Alps and Aoraki itself. Later, a one-hour easy walk takes you to the Tasman Glacier viewpoint: the major photo spot at Mt. Cook, where the glacier sits in the distance behind a lake. Your guide shapes the pace and stops around what interests you most, whether that's mountaineering history, the Māori significance of Aoraki, or the unique alpine flora and fauna.
On the return to Queenstown, you pass Lake Pukaki, a glacial lake with dazzling turquoise water caused by fine silt particles from the glacier. Lake Tekapo, the final major stop, sits in the heart of the South Island and is known for its alpine scenery and dark sky reserve. The drive ends back in Queenstown after a full day in the mountains.
