The Experience

We lifted off from the little airstrip near Aoraki / Mount Cook and I swear my stomach did a weird flip—like I was both nervous and grinning at the same time. The pilot, Dave (who grew up nearby), just chatted calmly about the weather patterns and pointed out how the clouds hugged the peaks some mornings. It was cold but not sharp, more like that crisp bite you get opening a freezer on a hot day. The blades thumped louder than I expected as we banked over the Tasman Glacier—New Zealand’s longest glacier, Dave said—and I pressed my forehead to the glass just trying to take it all in. There’s this blue-green lake below, ancient water from the glacier melt. It looked almost fake from up there.

Landing on the snow was surreal. My boots crunched down and for a second it was just silent except for someone’s laugh behind me—maybe it was mine? You could see Aoraki / Mount Cook right there, way bigger than any photo ever shows. The wind bit at my cheeks and I tried to scoop up a handful of snow (colder than I thought) while Dave told us about his first solo flight here as a teenager. He pointed out tiny specks in the distance—climbers, apparently—and joked that they probably regretted their life choices about now. I didn’t want to leave that spot honestly; something about standing in all that white space made everything else feel far away.

After we took off again, we crossed toward the West Coast and got this wild view of Franz Josef Glacier—jagged ice folding into itself like frozen waves. The light kept shifting over the mountains, sometimes blinding bright on one side then suddenly shadowy blue on another. Dave flew us along ridges so close you could almost count rocks if you squinted (not recommended). The whole thing lasted less than an hour but felt much longer—I still think about that silence up there sometimes when things get noisy back home.
