Queenstown to Mt Cook: A Long Drive That Earns Its Views

You get picked up from your Queenstown hotel and driven through the Kawarau Gorge, Lindis Pass, and the Mackenzie district to Lake Pukaki and Aoraki Mount Cook Village. The Experience

The sun is already high when the van pulls away from Queenstown, and the gorge opens up in front of you almost immediately. The Kawarau Gorge cuts through red rock and scrub, and your guide points out the suspension bridge as you pass—the one everyone bungee jumps off, though from the road it looks almost small. You stop at Roaring Meg Lookout if the light is right, and the Southern Alps start to show themselves in the distance, still pale and far away. The drive itself is part of the tour: Cromwell's wine country slides past, then Lindis Pass, one of only three alpine roads that actually cross the Southern Alps instead of going around them. It's a real mountain crossing, not a highway.

Around midday you hit Omarama, a township so quiet it feels like a set, and there's time for a break or to grab what locals swear is the best chicken pie in New Zealand—the kind of claim that sticks with you even if you skip it. Then the landscape flattens into the Mackenzie district, and Lake Pukaki appears ahead of you, so blue it looks photoshopped. Your guide stops the van, and everyone gets out to take pictures. Some book a scenic flight and land on the Tasman Glacier—that costs extra and there's a fuel surcharge of NZ$20 per person you pay to the airline. Others just sit at the Hermitage Hotel with a hot chocolate and watch the mountain. The guide drops you where you need to be and picks you up when you're done, so you don't have to coordinate anything yourself. On the way back to Queenstown, you stop at High Country Salmon to feed the fish and taste fresh salmon, and if there's time, Jacksons Orchard for local fruit and ice cream. The van gets you back to your hotel as the sun is setting, and you've crossed the Southern Alps twice in one day.
