The experience
The plane lifts off from Milford Sound and banks up through the fiord itself: Mitre Peak rising 5,560 feet straight out of the water on one side, Bowen Falls dropping 530 feet on the other. You're not driving out the same way you came in. You're flying it, which means thirty-five minutes of unbroken views instead of two hours of switchbacks. The pilot narrates as you climb, pointing out how the waterfalls multiply after rain (hundreds of them pour off the cliffs when the weather turns), and then the fiord opens up behind you and you're tracking south down the Arthur valley toward Sutherland Falls, New Zealand's highest waterfall at 1,900 feet.
After that the flight path swings east over the Southern Alps, crossing the main divide with small alpine lakes and jagged snow-capped peaks below, then down through the Greenstone and Caples valleys: dense forest the whole way through. It's the kind of geography that makes sense only from the air. You cross Lake Te Anau, New Zealand's second largest, and then Lake Wakatipu opens up beneath you: 46 miles long, 1,250 feet deep in places, with Queenstown sitting right on the shore.
