The experience

The Fiordland Jewel holds only 22 passengers, which means the two cruises of Milford Sound stay small and the kayaking happens in groups that can actually move through the water without crowding each other. You board at 2:50pm and leave the terminal at 3:10pm, so the first afternoon gives you time to settle into your cabin (each one has an ensuite, sea views and climate control) before the crew takes you out on the water. Mitre Peak rises above you as you paddle, and the tender boat lets you explore coves the kayaks cannot reach.

Dinner is three courses, cooked fresh by the onboard chef, and afterward you watch underwater film footage captured by the Fiordland Jewel's own Remote Operating Vehicle. The ROV goes where divers cannot, so you see the sea life of Milford Sound from angles most visitors never get. The hot tub on the top deck is open after dinner if the weather holds. Breakfast is cooked and continental, served before the second morning cruise takes you back through the sound before you return to the terminal around 8:45am.

Van connections are available from Te Anau or Queenstown if you need transport to Milford Sound Terminal. These cost extra and can be arranged as a shared ride or an exclusive charter. Parking at the terminal is NZD$30 if you drive yourself. The cruise runs from late October through April. Dietary requirements can be noted at booking, and the crew speaks English throughout.
