His voice crackled in my headset, but you could hear the pride — or maybe a bit of sadness — in it. I pressed my forehead to the cold window and tried to take it all in: the blue-green lakes, those weirdly perfect snow lines, and how the morning sun hit the peaks just right. The flight from Wanaka felt shorter than I expected (maybe 40 minutes?), but every second was packed with views I’m still trying to describe to people back home.
The Southern Alps really do look like someone just crumpled up a map and left it there. We skimmed over two national parks — Pete pointed out names I’d never heard before, like Mount Aspiring and Fox Glacier — and there were so many waterfalls that after a while I stopped counting. At one point, clouds slipped under us like slow-moving rivers. The plane ride itself is part of the Milford Sound Glacier Flight & Cruise day trip, but honestly it could’ve ended there and I’d have been happy.
Landing at Milford Sound felt almost too easy after all that drama in the sky. The air was damp and salty; you could hear distant birds echoing off those sheer cliffs. Our little group shuffled onto the boat for the cruise (coffee included, which hit the spot). Up close, those waterfalls are louder than you think — mist everywhere, hair sticking to my face, everyone grinning like kids again. Pete met us after we docked; he remembered everyone’s name somehow. The flight back took a different route so we saw even more valleys and glaciers — by then my phone battery had given up but honestly, I didn’t mind.
