You board a modern catamaran and cruise the full length of Milford Sound for two hours, passing named waterfalls, glacier-carved peaks and seal colonies while the skipper brings the bow close to the cliffs. The spray from Stirling Falls hits the deck, the crew shares local knowledge, and you can grab a coffee or local wine from the café bar. Wheelchair accessible, suitable for all fitness levels, and includes GST and hot beverages.
The boat pulls away from the dock and you're already soaked—not from rain, but from spray that hits the bow as the catamaran noses straight toward Stirling Falls. That's the first surprise on a Milford Sound cruise: the skipper doesn't keep a polite distance. The fiord is only two kilometers wide at its mouth, and the mountains rise so steeply that the boat has to get close to the cliffs just to fit. You stand on the open sun deck or settle into the covered rear area, depending on the weather, and watch the landscape tilt toward you.
The cruise follows the full length of the fiord to the Tasman Sea and back down the opposite side, which takes about two hours total. Along the way you pass Bowen Falls, Mitre Peak (the one that looks like a bishop's hat), Fairy Falls, Bridal Veil Falls—each one a named landmark, each one a reason the skipper and crew slow down or point the bow closer. They know the fiord the way a local knows their own street, and they'll join you on the foredeck for the finale at Stirling Falls, where the water drops straight from the rainforest above. Look for New Zealand fur seals on Seal Rock and occasionally dolphins in the water, though they're not guaranteed. The spray from the waterfalls is real and cold and tastes like glacier melt.
The catamaran has three decks—spacious seating indoors if the weather turns, the open sun deck if it doesn't, and that covered rear area for a middle ground. The onboard café bar serves hot and cold snacks and local wine or beer, so you can eat or drink while the cliffs move past. Coffee and tea are included. The crew are famously friendly and will take photos if you ask, which matters when you're trying to capture something that looks too big to fit in a frame.
Your cruise includes the two-hour Milford Sound experience aboard a modern three-deck catamaran, coffee and/or tea, and all GST. You'll have access to the open sun deck, covered rear deck and spacious indoor seating, plus the onboard café bar where you can purchase additional hot and cold snacks, local wine and beer.
