The experience

The boat pulls away from the dock and you're already soaked, not from rain, but from spray that hits the bow as the catamaran noses straight toward Stirling Falls. That's the first surprise on a Milford Sound cruise: the skipper doesn't keep a polite distance. The fiord is only two kilometers wide at its mouth, and the mountains rise so steeply that the boat has to get close to the cliffs just to fit. You stand on the open sun deck or settle into the covered rear area, depending on the weather, and watch the landscape tilt toward you.

The cruise follows the full length of the fiord to the Tasman Sea and back down the opposite side, which takes about two hours total. Along the way you pass Bowen Falls, Mitre Peak (the one that looks like a bishop's hat), Fairy Falls, Bridal Veil Falls: each one a named landmark, each one a reason the skipper and crew slow down or point the bow closer.
