The Experience

You step out in Blenheim and the air smells faintly like grape skins—maybe it’s just my imagination, but I swear you can taste the vineyards before you even see them. Our guide, Pete, waves us over to his van with a grin that says he’s done this a hundred times and still loves it. There’s no rush; he asks what wines we’re into (I blurt “Sauvignon Blanc!” too fast—classic tourist move) and then we’re off, winding through roads lined with vines so neat they almost look fake. The sun feels different here, softer maybe? Or maybe that’s just what happens when you know there’s wine ahead.

First stop is a place where the tasting room opens right onto the garden. Someone’s dog is napping by the door. We try three whites and one pinot noir—my favorite is something I can’t pronounce (Pete tries to teach me; I fail). The winemaker pops in to say hi and tells us about last year’s harvest being tricky because of late rain. You can tell he means it—it’s not a speech, just real talk over glasses that catch the light. Lunch comes next at a vineyard restaurant with tables outside; I order fish and chips because why not? It tastes better than it should, or maybe that’s just the view.

After lunch we hit two more wineries. One has this chocolate shop attached—Makana, I think—and I end up buying truffles for later (they didn’t last long). The group gets chatty after a few tastings; someone from Auckland laughs about “wine legs” on the glass and Pete jumps in with some trivia about how Marlborough became New Zealand’s wine capital. By now everything feels easy—no pressure to be an expert, just enjoy what you like. The drive back is quiet except for soft music and a couple of us dozing off in the sun. I still think about that Sauvignon Blanc sometimes—how it tasted sharper after laughing so much at lunch.
