The experience

The Christchurch and Akaroa tour runs about seven hours and splits the time between the city and the coast: you'll see the Botanic Gardens and city highlights, then drive over Little River and the Hilltop Lookout toward Akaroa, New Zealand's only French colonial town, where you can browse galleries and waterfront cafés. The Shamarra Alpaca Farm stop (optional, tickets booked separately) sits on the way back, with over 160 alpacas and harbour views. The Christchurch Gondola is also optional if you want the skyline views.

The full-day Arthur's Pass tour takes you inland through the Southern Alps to Castle Hill, a landscape of massive limestone boulders and tussock grassland. The Kaikoura whale-watching option heads north along the coast, where sperm whales, dolphins and seals live in deep water close to shore. Both full-day trips return you to the port in time for your ship's departure. Because cruise schedules are tight, you can book only one tour per day: the operator builds the timing around your ship's arrival and departure windows, so the whole day fits inside your port call.
