Paddle to an island only kayakers reach, then walk among flightless birds

Kayak across Lake Wakatipu to Pigeon Island, a bird sanctuary in the Southern Alps that has no road access. After a safety briefing on a secluded beach, you paddle out to the island, stop for morning or afternoon tea and a short walk where you may spot flightless birds, then paddle back along wild shorelines beneath glaciers. A live English-speaking guide leads the full journey.

The experience

The kayak puts you where no road goes. Pigeon Island sits in the heart of the Southern Alps, ringed by mountains and glaciers, and the only way to reach it is across Lake Wakatipu by water. A safety and equipment briefing happens first on a secluded beach, covering everything you need to operate the kayak and move safely across the lake. The paddle out takes you along the wild shorelines the operator names, with the mountain peaks and glacier faces visible the whole way.

Once you land on the island beach, you stop for tea and cake, then walk the island itself. This is where the flightless birds live (the sanctuary protects species found nowhere else), and the walk gives you a chance to spot them in their habitat. The island sits away from crowds and general public access, so the wildlife and the quiet are part of what makes it reachable only by kayak.

The paddle back follows the same route, and the whole outing runs about four and a half hours from start to finish. Private transportation is included, so you do not arrange your own way to the beach where the briefing starts.
