Kapiti Island Day Tour: Native Birds & Local Stories
A pest-free island where native birds live without predators, and a local guide tells you what you're seeing.
A guided day tour of Kapiti Island departing from Paraparaumu Beach includes return ferry transport, a one-hour guided nature and history walk led by a local guide, lunch at the lodge, and entry permits. The tour runs five to six hours total. The island is closed for annual maintenance during June, July and August.
Step-by-step itinerary
Guided tour of Kapiti Island
- Take ferry from Paraparaumu Beach
- Meet local guide at Waiorua Bay
- Join guided walk identifying flora and fauna
- Learn island history and stories
- Enjoy independent walking time
- Have buffet lunch at the lodge
- Return to mainland by ferry
The Experience
What makes Kapiti Island different from other New Zealand nature reserves is that it's pest and predator-free—which is why the native birds here behave and sound nothing like birds on the mainland. You take the ferry from Paraparaumu Beach to Waiorua at the northern end of the island, where your local guide meets you. From there, the walk is about an hour, and the guide's job is to help you identify what you're actually looking at: the flora, the fauna, the species that only live here because nothing hunts them.
After the guided walk, you have time to explore on your own before lunch at the lodge. The chef prepares a buffet there, and coffee or tea comes with it. The afternoon ferry takes you back to the mainland. The whole day runs between five and six hours from start to finish, and the permits and entry are included—you don't arrange those separately. You'll need at least a moderate level of fitness for the walking, and the lodge closes during June, July and August for annual maintenance, so those months aren't an option.
On the morning of your tour, call between 7 and 7:15 a.m. to confirm your check-in time and that the tour is going ahead. The number is 0800 527 484. Public transport options are available near Paraparaumu Beach if you're not driving yourself.

Is this one for you?The tour departs from Paraparaumu Beach, so if you're staying elsewhere or without a car, you'll need to arrange your own transport to the ferry—but once you're there, the ferry, the guide, the walk and the logistics on the island are all arranged. The local guide handles the identification and the stories, so you're not trying to figure out what you're looking at on your own.
