The Experience

So right at the start, our guide Jamie grinned and handed me a paddle — “Don’t worry if you’ve never kayaked,” he said, which made me feel better since I was already eyeing the glassy water of Lake Mapourika like it might swallow me whole. The lake was so still that morning you could see the clouds doubled up in it. I remember a faint smell of wet earth and something sweet from the bush nearby. There were only five of us plus Jamie, who grew up around Franz Josef and seemed to know every birdcall by heart.

We glided out together — honestly, I didn’t expect to feel so quiet inside. You hear nothing but the dip of paddles and sometimes a tui calling from somewhere deep in the trees.
