The Experience

If you land in Dunedin with an afternoon free or you're staying in the city and want to see both the urban landmarks and the peninsula's wildlife in one go, this tour builds the day for you. The guide picks you up, takes you through the city centre to The Octagon, past the Dunedin Railway Station (the most photographed building in the southern hemisphere, according to the operator), and up Baldwin Street — the world's steepest city street — so you get the geography and the stories without having to navigate it yourself. The vehicle is air-conditioned and the group stays small, so there's room to ask questions and linger at the spots worth lingering at.

The peninsula half starts at Larnach Castle, where the gardens are included and you can walk the grounds or sit with a coffee and watch Otago Harbour. From there you head to the penguin reserve — called The Opera — where the day shifts from sightseeing to something closer to wildlife watching. You learn about the yellow-eyed penguin and the conservation work happening there, then move into the rehabilitation centre (when penguins are present) to see them and other penguin species up close. A short bus ride takes you to the reserve itself, where the guide leads you on an approximately 2km walk through uneven ground with some steps. That's where you stand a real chance of seeing yellow-eyed penguins, little penguins, fur seals and sea lions in their habitat.

The walk is the most physically demanding part of the day — it's described as needing at least a moderate level of fitness, and there's a lot of ground to cover. If the reserve walk isn't possible for you, there's an option to wait at reception instead. The whole tour runs in all weather, so pack layers and waterproof gear. If you want to go inside Larnach Castle itself beyond the gardens, you can book and pay for that on the day.
