The experience
The flight departs south from Christchurch over the Canterbury Plains, where you'll see the patchwork of sheep, dairy and crop farming below. As you climb toward the Southern Alps, the landscape shifts to glacial valleys carved by receding ice, many now filled with moraine-dammed lakes. Lake Pukaki and Lake Tekapo appear in their distinctive glacial blue: that colour comes from glacial flour, the finely ground rock particles suspended in the water from the glaciers feeding them.
If weather allows, the helicopter lands on Liebig Dome at 8,000 feet, a ledge that sits directly across from Aoraki Mount Cook (12,218 feet), Sir Edmund Hillary's training ground for Everest. The landing site may have seasonal snow. Your pilot will decide whether it's safe to touch down. From there you fly over the Tasman Glacier, New Zealand's largest at nearly 15 miles long and 2,000 feet thick, before heading home through the mountains and rivers of the Mackenzie region.
On the return leg, you pass Mount Sunday (Edoras in the Lord of the Rings films, where Aragorn and Gandalf met King Théoden) and fly over the grassy fields near Twizel where the Pelennor Fields battle was filmed. Lake Pukaki's turquoise water and mountain backdrop also appear in the warg chase sequence from An Unexpected Journey. The pilot provides commentary throughout, and there are photo opportunities at every stage. The whole flight takes 3 hours from check-in to landing back in Christchurch.
Is this one for you?Book this tour if you want to land on the mountain itself rather than view it from a distance: the alpine landing at Liebig Dome is what sets this flight apart, though it depends on weather on the day. A minimum of two paying passengers per booking is required. If there aren't enough bookings, you'll be offered an alternative date or a full refund.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Infant (under 3).
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
Can we actually land on the mountain, or do we just fly over it?
Liebig Dome, the alpine landing site, is weather-dependent. If conditions allow, you'll land at 8,000 feet with a direct view of Mount Cook. If not, you'll fly close enough to see it clearly. Your pilot makes the call on the day and will let you know before departure.
What is Lake Pukaki and why is it that bright blue colour?
Lake Pukaki is a moraine-dammed lake in the Mackenzie region, formed when a receding glacier's terminal moraine blocked the valley. The intense turquoise colour comes from glacial flour (extremely fine rock particles ground by the glacier and suspended in the water), which reflects light in a way that creates that distinctive hue.
How much of the flight is actually over the mountain, and how much is the journey there and back?
The 3-hour flight includes the full route: departure over the Canterbury Plains, the climb into the Southern Alps and across the glacial lakes, the alpine landing (if weather permits), and the return via the Tasman Glacier and Lord of the Rings filming sites. The time is split between transit and viewing rather than hovering in one spot.
Will we see Lord of the Rings filming locations on this tour?
Yes. Mount Sunday (Edoras, the capital of Rohan) is visible in the upper Rangitata river valley on the outbound leg. On the return, you fly over the Pelennor Fields battle site near Twizel and Lake Pukaki, which provided the backdrop for the warg chase in An Unexpected Journey.
What happens if the weather is bad and we can't land on the mountain?
The alpine landing is weather-dependent, and your pilot will decide on the day whether it's safe. If landing isn't possible, you'll still fly over Mount Cook and see the glaciers, lakes and surrounding peaks from the air. Reconfirmation of your booking is required 24 hours before departure by calling through the booking platform.
