The experience

The tour opens at the Canterbury Museum, where exhibitions on Māori culture, early European settlement and Antarctic exploration set the region's story. From there, the route moves into the Botanic Gardens: 21 hectares of themed beds, native and exotic plants, waterways and sculptures that shift with the seasons. The gardens are a working landscape, not a manicured display. Birds nest in the trees, historic greenhouses stand among the flower beds, and the paths loop through open lawns and dense plantings without a fixed sequence.

The Christchurch Gondola carries you up the Port Hills in a single ascent, opening 360° views across the city, Canterbury Plains, Lyttelton Harbour and the distant Southern Alps. At the summit, viewing decks and a short walking track let you hold the view. A café and gift shop sit at the top. The International Antarctic Centre follows: an indoor experience where you walk through a simulated Antarctic storm, meet rescued Little Blue Penguins, and climb into a Hagglund all-terrain vehicle simulator to understand life and research on the frozen continent.

Two optional additions shape the afternoon: punting on the Avon River, where an Edwardian-dressed punter poles a flat-bottomed boat through leafy parks and heritage buildings in near-silence, or a gondola ride if you skipped it earlier. The Cardboard Cathedral, designed by Japanese architect Shigeru Ban after the 2011 earthquake, closes the tour: a structure of cardboard tubes, shipping containers and glass that stands as a symbol of resilience and a quiet space for reflection. Hotel drop-off ends the half-day. The pace is unhurried, and the guide shapes stops to the group's interests within the 4–5 hour window.

Is this one for you?The tour runs 4 to 5 hours with multiple stops and a mix of walking, viewing and optional boat or gondola time, so it suits a half-day without rushing. If you want to add the punting or extend at any stop, the guide can adjust within the window. If you prefer a faster pace through fewer sites, that works too.

Top questions

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Youth (12 to 17 years); Child (3 to 11 years); Infant (under 3): free.

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What is the Cardboard Cathedral and why is it made of cardboard?

The Cardboard Cathedral is a post-earthquake structure designed by Japanese architect Shigeru Ban using cardboard tubes, shipping containers and glass. Built after the 2011 earthquake, it serves as both a functioning cathedral and a symbol of Christchurch's resilience and renewal, offering a quiet spiritual space within the city.

Can I choose which activities to do on the tour, or are all the stops included?

The core stops (Canterbury Museum, Botanic Gardens, Christchurch Gondola and International Antarctic Centre) are part of the tour route. Punting on the Avon River and visits to other sites like New Brighton Beach are optional activities you can add or skip depending on time and interest.

How much walking is involved in the Botanic Gardens?

The Botanic Gardens span 21 hectares with multiple themed areas, waterways and sculptures. You stroll through the gardens at a leisurely pace. The route is flat and accessible, with no steep climbs, so the amount of walking depends on which sections your guide leads you through and your own pace.

What are the views like from the top of the Christchurch Gondola?

The gondola ascends to Port Hills and opens 360° views over Christchurch city, the Canterbury Plains, Lyttelton Harbour and the Southern Alps in the distance. Viewing decks at the summit let you take in the full panorama, and a short walking track offers additional vantage points.

What's included in the tour price?

Private transportation in an air-conditioned Mercedes Sprinter, a professional English-speaking guide, bottled water and WiFi on board are included. Hotel pickup and drop-off are part of the booking. Meals and dinner are not included. Optional activities like punting or additional gondola rides are priced separately.
