The experience

The gondola ride opens the day with views across Christchurch, the Canterbury Plains, Lyttelton Harbour, and the Southern Alps from the top of the Port Hills. From there, the guide takes you through the Canterbury Museum to explore Māori heritage, natural history, and Antarctic research, then into the Christchurch Botanic Gardens where you walk among native and exotic plants, rose gardens, and historic trees at your own pace.

The International Antarctic Centre is where the tour shifts into hands-on territory: you encounter huskies, ride the Hagglund vehicle across simulated ice, and step into the Storm Dome to feel what Antarctic conditions are actually like. The guide explains the research and wildlife while you move through each zone. A stop at New Brighton Beach gives you time to walk the pier and take in the Pacific, and if you want it, a punt down the Avon River with a guide in period dress offers a quieter moment in the inner city.

Hotel pickup and drop-off are included, along with air-conditioned transport, bottled water, and WiFi on board. The guide speaks English and French, so if you're traveling with French speakers, let the operator know at booking. The pace is built for all fitness levels, and the full day runs 8 to 10 hours depending on which optional stops you choose.

Top questions

What languages is the tour guided in?

Live guide in English and French.

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Youth (13 to 17 years); Child (2 to 12 years); Infant (under 2): free.

What's the International Antarctic Centre actually like to visit?

The International Antarctic Centre lets you experience Antarctic conditions without the cold: you ride a Hagglund vehicle (the same all-terrain transport used in Antarctica), step into the Storm Dome to feel the wind and ice simulation, and encounter huskies and learn about Antarctic research and wildlife. It's designed as a hands-on experience rather than a museum walk-through.

Can I do the Avon River punt and the gondola ride on the same tour?

Both are available as optional activities during the tour, so yes. You can add them both. The punt is a guided boat ride down the gentle Avon River with someone in traditional Edwardian dress, and the gondola takes you to the top of the Port Hills. Neither is automatically included, so confirm which ones you want when you book.

How much time do I spend walking in the Botanic Gardens?

The Christchurch Botanic Gardens are built into the tour as a peaceful walk through the grounds, but the exact time depends on your pace and the other stops you choose. The guide will show you the rose gardens, water features, and historic trees, and you move through at a comfortable speed.

Is lunch provided during the day?

Lunch is not included in the tour. You'll have time at stops like New Brighton Beach or within the city, and the guide can suggest places to eat, but you'll need to arrange and pay for your own meal.
